How do I bulk-import URL redirects into Shopify?

Paste your old and new URLs. Get a CSV in the format Shopify imports, with every problem listed first: chains, loops, duplicates, self-redirects and paths Shopify will not redirect. It all runs in your browser.

This tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.

What it does

The right CSV format

The two headers Shopify uses in its own sample file, "Redirect from" and "Redirect to", one redirect per row, with correct quoting. Old URLs are cut down to paths such as /old/page.html, and domains are removed.

Loops, chains and duplicates

A redirect that points to itself, two rows with the same old URL and different targets, A to B and B to C chains (with a one-click fix that points A straight to C) and A to B to A loops.

Paths Shopify refuses

Old URLs beginning with /cart, /apps, /orders, /shop and the other prefixes the Shopify Help Center says cannot be redirected, plus fixed paths like /collections and /products.

Match old to new by words

Paste a list of old URLs and a list of new URLs in any order. The tool proposes a match for each old URL by comparing the words in the last part of the path and shows the score. It never applies a match unless you click it.

Questions

What format does the Shopify redirect CSV need?

A CSV file with two columns. The first row is the header "Redirect from,Redirect to", and each row after it is one redirect, for example /example_product.php,/products/example-product. That is the layout of the sample file Shopify links from its Help Center. To import it, go to Content Menus URL redirects in the Shopify admin, click Import, add the file, go through the review step Shopify shows and click Import redirects.

Should "Redirect from" include my domain?

Shopify's examples use paths that start with a slash, so use the path only, like /old/page. This tool removes the domain and the #fragment from old URLs for you. The "Redirect to" column can hold a path on your own store or a full URL on another domain.

Why does Shopify say a redirect "won't work"?

Shopify only redirects from URLs that are broken. If the old URL still loads a valid page on your store, the redirect is ignored. A browser tool cannot tell which URLs are live, so check the old URLs that are also real Shopify pages, such as /collections/all, before you rely on them.

Do redirect chains and loops matter?

Yes. In a chain (A to B, B to C) every visitor and search engine crawler makes one extra request per step, so pointing A directly to C is better. In a loop (A to B, B to A) no page is ever reached. This tool flags both and can flatten chains in one click.

Is there a limit on how many redirects I can import?

Shopify's Help Center gives a limit for the whole store: 100,000 URL redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus. It does not state a limit for a single file, so for very large lists import in parts and check Shopify's review step before you confirm.

Are my URLs uploaded anywhere?

No. The checks, the table and the CSV file are all made in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is stored once you close the page.
